There is no greater call to action than to help families in need.

In 2014, Jim Fergusson was recognized at the Annual Durham Catholic Children’s Foundation Gala with DCDSB’s Community Service Award for providing over 25 years of dedication as the heart and soul of the Durham Schools Food for Clothing Exchange.

In 2019, this act of service continues to be an annual community event that provides children and families with access to gently used clothing every November prior to the start of the winter season in exchange for a non-perishable food item. Each fall, Mr. Fergusson faithfully seeks and coordinates clothing donations from schools across the region.

The program began 31 years ago after Mr. Fergusson saw a little girl walking in harsh winter conditions wearing nothing but track pants, rubber boots and a spring jacket.  From that moment, Mr. Fergusson took action and continued to do so for generations of students and families.

On behalf of the Durham Catholic Children’s Foundation and Durham Catholic District School Board, thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Fergusson for their selfless act of service. Their efforts have made a difference in the lives of so many of our most vulnerable children and their families, setting an example of excellence for all.

The Food for Clothing Exchange will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2019.
